Research Fellow



    A research position is now available to work on 5G Connected Forest, a new 5G testbed project funded by the UK Government(Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)). Visitors to the Sherwood Forest Country Park will be able to get a 3D experience of the forest like never before following the go-ahead for a £10m project to test the latest 5G technology at the world-renowned tourist destination. The project will develop and evaluate new sensor technologies over 5G networks in forest environments, leveraging unmanned vehicles such as robots and drones.

    In particular, this post will contribute to the development and deployment of mobile use experience around the forest in collaboration with other project partners, including, Nottingham County Council, Birmingham City University, Netmore IOT Solutions, Gooii, ISPB, Harworth Group, Centre Parcs UK, Stagecoach East Midlands and Parkwood Outdoors.

    We invite applicants who have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area such as Computer Science or Communications Engineering to join our research team. The applicants must be able to demonstrate a good research track record in the discipline of Pervasive Computing. Strong background in software and app development, and good knowledge of AR/VR/MR technologies. We will also value the ability to learn new technologies outside your current skills and expertise. The role will also require you to collaborate effectively with external stakeholders, and other team members. Interpersonal skills will be essential for this role.

    Skills and Experience

    Essential Skills

    Hold a PhD degree in computing, communication engineering, or a related technical subject, or significant industry experience.
    Have a good research experience in Pervasive Computing (including the design, development and evaluation of pervasive computing systems).
    Working experience of at least one programming language such as Java, Python, Javascript, C++, or C#
    Have good experience in developing mobile phone applications.
    Have the ability to work independently and as part of a group.

    Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and spot trends to influence future actions.

    Desirable Skills

    Have a good knowledge of Augmented. Virtual and Mxed Reality, other mobile development platforms.
    Relevant experience in computer networks and IoT or hardware systems.
    An understanding of system development including network protocols, middleware, APIs, user interface.
    Experience in data visualisation and data science tools.
    Ability to work effectively in a team, with excellent time management, problem solving approach, practically minded with hands-on ability, methodical and organised.

    Good publications record.
    Able to assist with technical project management duties.
