An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to join the Solar Physics Group. This position is funded by NERC, to work with Prof. Lucie Green on a project to investigate the physical processes leading up to solar energetic particle events (SEPs). The post-holder will work as part of the SWARM project (SWIMMR Aviation and Risk Modelling), a 5-member UK consortium that is led by the University of Surrey. The SWARM project aims to provide a now-casting and embryonic forecasting capability for ionising radiation risks to aircraft, their crews and passengers to be used by the Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre. The project is funded by the SWIMMR (Space Weather Instrumentation, Measurement, Modelling and Risk) initiative, a four-year Strategic Priorities Fund programme that will improve the UK’s capabilities for space weather monitoring, prediction and risk mitigation.
Some of the duties and responsibilities of the postholder are:
To conduct research into the solar precursors of SEPs/GLEs using multi-wavelength solar remote sensing data.
To investigate and verify which input parameters from solar observations might be used to improve current SEP
forecast modelling.
This post is funded for 20 months in the first instance.
Key Requirements
The successful applicant should hold or expect to hold a PhD in a related physics field or have equivalent experience. Experience of scientific research and publications in peer-reviewed journals are essential requirements for this post. The postholder should also be able to undertake effective and efficient data analysis using relevant software such as IDL or Python.
