Postdoctoral Research Associate – Correlative Microscopy
    Harwell, Oxfordshire
£33,963 - £39,955 dependent upon skills and experience
Full time / Flexible hours considered
    3 Years Fixed Term

    About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility used for academic and industrial research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

B24 is the correlative cryo-imaging beamline at Diamond. At B24, as part of our on-going program of technique development, our established X-ray imaging capabilities have been extended through the use of novel super resolution methods and are incorporated within a user-friendly correlative imaging workflow.

This unique combination of methods allows us to record cell ultrastructure and accompanying chemical signatures in 3D to a resolution of a few tens of nanometers.

The beamline has strong links with developers at other synchrotrons and academic institutes and strives to deliver user-friendly access and effective workflows for correlative imaging (including methods and protocols for sample preparation, data collection and in silico processing and correlation).

    About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a PDRA in Correlative Microscopy for biological samples at cryogenic temperatures on a 3-year fixed term basis.

You will work towards improving our biological cryo-correlative microscopy platform and contribute to the on-going development of new state-of-the-art biological imaging methods.
You will play an active role in further commissioning of our existing capabilities and have the opportunity to be influential in consolidating imaging developments in correlative imaging and deliver a robust correlative workflow for sample preparations and data analysis at Diamond and internationally.

You will be expected to participate in internationally competitive research programmes which exploit the capabilities of B24 and Diamond in general. There will be opportunities to join existing biomedical projects and you will be encouraged to establish new collaborative directions. You will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories for structural and cellular biology embedded at the beamline and within the Research Complex at Harwell.

UK and overseas travel will be required, along with the ability to work flexibly with occasional weekend and out-of hours working.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in the establishment and development of new techniques for cutting-edge biological imaging using both visible light and X-rays.

    About You
You will hold an appropriate Science Degree and you will likely have completed your doctoral studies in some aspect of cellular/structural biology.

You will be a highly enthusiastic scientist with a strong interest in methods development.

You will have a good background and understanding in microscopy principles and methods with knowledge from some of the following areas; X-ray tomography; fluorescence microscopy; super resolution fluorescence imaging; conventional biological imaging; X-ray imaging; electron microscopy/tomography.

You will also demonstrate skills and a particular interest in the design and development of software or of tailoring existing software to meet specific user needs.

You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills to interact with staff and facility users at all levels.

    Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to ensure an excellent work/life balance including 25 days’ annual leave, 13 days statutory and company holidays, flexible working hours, an onsite nursery, an excellent pension scheme, and social and sporting activities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.

    To Apply
Diamond is a thriving international organisation, attracting a diverse range of talented individuals from around the world. Our staff currently comprises 39 nationalities and we welcome applications from everyone interested in joining us.

Applicants are required to outline their suitability for this role via the online application process. Please also state where you saw this role advertised.

The closing date for applications is 22/03/2020.
