Applications are invited for the post of Research Fellow in Marine Ecology at the University of Southampton, based at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. The successful candidate will explore, using hypothesis-led laboratory experiments, the risks associated with exposure of marine organisms to uncontaminated versus contaminated (persistent organic pollutants and/or additive chemicals) microplastics. Under the direction of the Professor Martin Solan and Associate Professor Jasmin Godbold, research will focus on the extent to which accumulation of microplastics of different shapes, sizes and polymers interact with specific sediment-dwelling invertebrates in present versus future environments and moderate associated levels of benthic ecological functioning. Funded by UKRI NERC, the position will involve direct collaboration with the University of Exeter (Prof. Tamara Galloway, Dr. Ceri Lewis), University of Plymouth (Prof. Richard Thompson), Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas, Dr. Thomas Maes), University of East Anglia (Dr. Andrew Mayes), the National Oceanography Centre (Dr. Dan Mayor) and associated stakeholders. The successful candidate will have, or be nearing completion of, a PhD, or equivalent professional qualification, in marine biology/ecology or a related relevant discipline and be well versed in the ecological consequences of environmental change and/or pollution in marine ecosystems. The successful candidate will coordinate and conduct all laboratory and fieldwork and will be responsible for data analysis and write-up for publication and will contribute to the wider research environment within the research group.
