At the Institute for Virology and Immunology of the University of Würzburg, Germany there is a

    Postdoc-position (TV-L E13/100%)

vacant to be filled at the next possible time point. It is a position within the DFG-funded research unit „Advanced Concepts in Cellular Immune Control of Cytomegalovirus“. The position is currently temporary for one year (with the possibility for an extension for 2-4 more years) The salary will be according to TV-L E13, 100%.

The majority of the human population is persistently infected by cytomegalovirus (CMV). Infection is mostly asymptomatic, but can be life-threatening for the immunocompromised. CMV particularly causes severe disease in congenitally infected newborns and transplantation patients. The goal of our research unit is to understand the interaction of infected cells with cells of our immune system. We employ systems biology approaches to study these mechanisms and to quantitatively measure different parameters on a molecular level. The analysis and interpretation of the resulting big data requires new computational and statistical methods.

The following tasks are involved in the vacant position:
    • Integrative analysis of existing, unpublished data to reannotate the CMV transcriptome and proteome (including human and murine CMV):
Ribosome profiling, transcription start site profiling, single-cell transcriptomics, SLAM-seq
    • Comparative genomics analysis of human and murine CMV
    • Identification of MHC-I presented antigens using mass spectrometry data
    • Further development of published and unpublished computational and statistical methods for the analysis of such data
    • Close interaction with the virological groups in the research unit

For these tasks, the candidate needs to fulfill the following requirements:
    • a completed university diploma or master studies in bioinformatics, informatics, statistics, biology, or similar studies
    • experience in programming in Java and R
    • knowledge of Unix/Linux systems
    • basic knowledge of statistical methods
    • experience in handling big biological data
    • ability to work in a team and good communication skills
    • willingness to work scientifically and independently
