Postdoctoral Fellow - Biomaterials and tissue regeneration



    The Department

    The Department of Anatomy is one of the largest and longest-established departments at the University of Otago. Our staff teach and research a diverse range of exciting topics in the field of biomedical sciences, including neuroscience.


    The Role

    In this role, you will be responsible for providing assistance with a project aiming to assess the bioactivity of synthetic heparan sulfate molecules to improve tissue repair.

    Duties will include:

    • Preparation and biological testing of biomaterials.

    • In vivo modelling of brain and skin injury.

    • Behavioural assessments following injury and repair.

    • Analysis of brain and skin samples.

    • Statistical analysis of data.

    • Writing manuscripts reporting on research results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

    • Presenting findings at scientific meetings.

    • Assisting in writing grant applications and pursuing funding opportunities.

    • Assisting with writing progress reports to the funding organisation.


    Your Skills and Experience

    • PhD in an appropriate neuroscience or biological science.

    • Experience in biomaterial preparation and testing, behavioural assessments, immuocyto/histochemistry and tissue culture.

    • Evidence of ability to publish.

    • A thorough approach to laboratory practice, accurate record-keeping, attention to detail and compliance with all regulatory requirements.

    • Ability to work cooperatively with a wide variety of people within a research environment.

    • Ability to work without direct supervision, set priorities and allocate own timetable.

    • Self-motivated, and committed to a research career in the biological sciences.
