    Postdoctoral Research Associate
    UKRI - NERC NOC
    Southampton
    £28,200 - £32,430
Full time/Part Time (hour’s subject to negotiation)
Fixed term (2 years) contract length variable for part time roles

    About Us
The Natural and Environmental Research Council (NERC) is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is a new entity that brings together nine partners to create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation, and a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC), part of NERC, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world.

    Benefits
In return for your talents, we offer a competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 14 Public/local days off and free car-parking. Opportunities for further training and development are supported.

    About the role
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated scientist, with experience in physical oceanography and its role in climate, to carry out Lagrangian analyses of drifter trajectories (observed and modelled).

You will diagnose freshwater pathways originating in Arctic and Greenland melt water using drifters deployed on the shelves around Greenland. You will then use the observed and modelled pathways and additional datasets, to identify processes by which freshwater crosses off the continental shelf and into the deep ocean in the subpolar North Atlantic.

You will work as part of the TERIFIC team (a new EU-funded project called Targeted Experiment to Reconcile Increased Freshwater with Increased Convection), within the Ocean Circulation and Processes subgroup at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton.

    Key responsibilities:
    • analysis of numerical simulations of drifters to plan drifter deployments and contribute to the TERIFIC scientific aims
    • drifter deployments and related logistics for TERIFIC fieldwork
    • quality control of drifter dataset
    • analysis of drifter dataset and related observational-based products to investigate the pathways of freshwater around Greenland and the Labrador Sea in order to contribute to the TERIFIC scientific aims
    • publish and present results from the TERIFIC project.

    About you
You will have a PhD in physical oceanography with experience in oceanographic observations and their analysis.

You must have a good knowledge of ocean dynamics and its role in climate systems with strong quantitative skills, good communication and interpersonal skills and a publication record appropriate to your career stage.

You should have an interest in presenting your results at national and international conferences.

Participation in fieldwork expeditions (anticipated for 2019/20) is desirable but not required.

    How to Apply
Applicants are required to include a cover letter outlining their suitability for this role.

Applications are handled by UK SBS; to apply please click the apply button. Applicants who are unable to apply online should contact us by telephone on +44 (0)1793 867000.

The closing date for applications is 11th November 2018.
