THE PROJECT. We are seeking ambitious applicants for a prestigious "Eyes High" Post Doctoral Fellowship (https://ucalgary.ca/research/eyes-high-postdoc) at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. The project will involve utilizing genetic, imaging and bioinformatics tools to dissect the mechanisms of stem cell maintenance, epigenetic regulation and telomere dynamics during early development. Individuals will participate in studies that include, but are not limited to, using murine models to examine effects of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) on measures of epigenetic state and telomere length and heterogeneity.

REQUIREMENTS. A PhD and/or MD and/or DVM degree in a subject related to cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, or a related field is preferred. Applicants must have prior experience with standard technologies of stem cell and molecular biology, and experience with embryo manipulation would be particularly useful. Expertise in genome editing, differential gene expression analysis of high-throughput sequencing data or research related to developing mouse models is also highly desirable. The candidate must be self-motivated, highly independent, and have excellent theoretical and practical research skills, with strong communication, written and interpersonal skills an asset.

OUR LABS AND LOCATION. The laboratories of Drs. Claudia Klein and Karl Riabowol are fully equipped for tissue culture, molecular biology and cell imaging, and the applicant will have full access to cutting edge microscopy facilities, DNA synthesis & sequencing including high-throughput services such as RNAseq, ChIPseq and others, mass spectrometry, FACS, a transgenic mouse facility including a knockout service, tissue microarray and bioinformatics services, among others. We are located in the Cumming School of Medicine and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine within the Heritage Medical Research Building at the University of Calgary. The city of Calgary is routinely recognized as being within the top 5-10 most liveable cities in the world, boasting numerous parks, a low crime rate and hundreds of kilometers of bicycle paths and other public indoor and outdoor facilities. Calgary is situated near the Rocky Mountains and Banff National Park, adding to quality of life through outstanding recreational activities.

WHAT WE OFFER. This position is supported by a University of Calgary 'Eyes High' Post Doctoral award with a two year term and the possibility of extending to a third year. The position comes with a $55,000/year stipend and all postdoctoral scholars whose initial appointment is for 12 months or longer will be eligible to receive the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). The AHCIP provides Alberta residents with coverage for hospital and physician services. Visit the AHCIP website for information on how to register and to see what hospital and physician services are provided. Additional information can be found at https://ucalgary.ca/research/postdoc/benefits or by inquiring at [email protected].
Training. The postdoctoral scholar will participate in weekly joint work-in-progress laboratory meetings, institute journal clubs and research seminars where external speakers, principal investigators, postdoctoral scholars and trainees present their most recent work. They will work in a collaborative multi-disciplinary group made up of researchers, postdoctoral scholars, research associates and coordinators, biostatisticians, bioinformaticians and trainees at all levels. We encourage trainees to present their research findings at local, national and international conferences.

APPLYING. To apply interested candidates should submit a cover letter indicating how their background suits this position, their CV with the names and contact information of three references in one PDF file to Ms. Benedicta Anim Odame-Ankrah (Email [email protected]) (Tel: 1-403-220-3029).

TIMELINE AND APPLICATIONS DETAILS. Applications are due by November 1, 2018. They will be evaluated and successful candidates will be contacted by November 19, to arrange interviews. Ideally the successful candidate will begin early in 2019, but starting date is negotiable.
