Founded in 1898 and the oldest of its kind in the world, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases. Through the creation of effective links with governments, NGOs, private organisations and global institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, LSTM aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
The Health Systems & Workforce Strengthening Unit within the International Public Health Department at LSTM, works to strengthen health systems and the health workforce for equitable access to quality health care, focussing particularly on health systems research and its use in guiding policy and programming to strengthen health systems and improve care. Presently, we are leading ‘PERFORM2Scale’, a 5-year multi-partner EC-funded project to scale up a process of strengthening district-level management to support workforce performance improvement; and have led the ‘ReBUILD’ consortium on strengthening health systems in conflict and crisis affected contexts and have plans to continue this work.
We are presently recruiting a Research Assistant (RA) or Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA), to support the Unit by helping the team to generate new work and deliver effectively on current projects. As part of the Health Systems and Workforce Strengthening Unit, you will liaise closely with researchers and international partners, to carry out and disseminate policy-relevant research in health systems in mid and low-income countries. You will provide technical input to partners in primary and secondary data management, publish research findings in peer reviewed academic journals and assist with grant proposals on health systems and human resources for health research.
To be successful, you must possess a PhD (for PDRA) or Masters (for RA) in health or health-related social science discipline including a research skills component. An additional qualification or module studied related to health systems and /or human resource management will be an added advantage to your application. Proven experience in designing research, applying for ethical approval, carrying out data collection field work and analysis of data sets in low and middle-income countries is essential. Applied research skills relevant to health or health-related social science, coupled with excellent skills for producing academic products and computing skills for quantitative and qualitative data analysis are vital to the post.
