The Winton Advanced Research Fellowship scheme supports outstanding, scientists, providing generous support packages comparable to those for Assistant Professor positions to enable Fellows to establish and lead their own independent research group. We are looking for candidates with new ambitious programmes that expand the range of research activities within the Cavendish Laboratory, and welcome proposals that cross traditional boundaries between physics and other sciences and engineering disciplines.
Candidates are expected to be of the calibre that would be competitive for schemes such as the Royal Society University Research Fellowship (URF), European Research Council (ERC) Starter grants and Assistant Professorship positions across the world. Fellows are expected to win permanent posts in universities at the end of their fellowships. A list of the current Fellows and details of their broad range of research interests can be found at

Fellows will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory space and facilities in the existing and the new Cavendish Laboratory (
http://www.phy.cam.ac.uk/caviii) that will be operational in 2021/22. Much of the research of the Programme is also based in the Maxwell Centre (
http://www.maxwell.cam.ac.uk) that is home to interdisciplinary research on the West Cambridge Science and Technology Campus. The Centre includes research facilities as part of the Henry Royce Institute and office space to foster collaborative research including engaging with industrial partners.
The Fund Managers of the Winton Programme invite applications for up to two Group Leaders - Advanced Research Fellows. Candidates will normally have completed at least one post-doctoral appointment at an institution different to that at which their PhD was obtained. Fellowships will be of 5 years' duration and will provide salary comparable to junior university faculty positions (on the scale currently £39,992-£50,618 per annum) with start-up packages sufficient to enable new groups to be established. Funding is available for:
Small and large equipment to enable new research directions to be started
Laboratory and computing facility set up costs and on-going operating expenses including access charges
Full funding for a graduate student with additional studentships available through Departmental allocations, Doctoral Training Centres and various Cambridge Scholarship schemes
Laboratory and office space for Fellow and their group members
Travel budget to build international collaborations and attend conferences
Proposed projects should be in new areas or take new approaches in established areas related to research in the broad field of the application of physics to sustainability.
Applicants should submit curriculum vitae including a list of publications and the names and addresses of 3 referees; a personal statement of accomplishments to date (up to 1000 words); an outline research proposal (up to 1500 words) with a brief account of research support required (up to 750 words). The research outline should emphasise the novelty of the research approach, but also set out a clear plan of activity.
Those successful at the outline stage will be invited for an interview for which guidance will be provided.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 5 years in the first instance.
