The West Africa Partnership of the MRC Unit in The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (MRC-G at LSHTM) invites applications for an early post-doctoral fellowship based in Dakar (Senegal), from interested persons who are of African or UK citizens and meet the stipulated qualifications.

The fellowship is for two years in the first instance and can be renewed depending on availability of funding and research output.

    1. Research Project title: Health systems for maternal and newborn health in West Africa.

    Project description:

The successful candidate will work on projects tackling the most pressing needs of maternal and newborn health in West Africa, from a social science perspective. In the first instance the candidate will work on two research projects. The first project will involve an exploratory case study of the health systems of The Gambia and Senegal, in particular the aim is to map out transnational use of health services, similarities and differences between the health systems of the two countries, and to identify interventions to optimise the health system of both countries. The second project will involve an in-depth case study of maternal and newborn health in two regions in Senegal with contrasting maternal and newborn health outcomes. Both projects will rely heavily on qualitative methods. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop her/his own research agenda on maternal and newborn health and submit grant proposals.
