Research Associate - Additive Manufacturing (3D-printing) Electrodes for Use in Bioelectrocatalysis(Fixed Term)

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate to join Dr Jenny Zhang at the Department of Chemistry on a project aimed at developing 3D electrode scaffolds for biocatalysis using 3D-printing techniques. The project involves the tailoring of high surface area electrodes for biocatalysts (mainly live cells) used in bio-photovoltaic and microbial fuel cells, with equal emphasis on electrode morphology/ink development and their applications to solar energy conversion problems.

The successful applicant will explore a range of additive manufacturing approaches including aerosol jet printing, extrusion printing and electrospinning for fabricating electrodes with features on the sub-100 micron scale, and develop expertise in photo-electrochemistry and biocatalysis. They will be expected to establish methodolgies and ink formulations for electrode fabrication, use 3D drawing softwares such as AutoCAD, and be familiar with scanning electron microscopy and other common material visualisation/characterisation techniques.

Applicants should have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in materials chemistry, chemistry, chemical or material enginnering or related disciplines. It is essential that the applicant can demonstrate expertise within the field of additive manufacturing and materials chemistry, with experience in electrochemistry being desirable. The successful candidate will have a keen interest in new material fabrication techniques, its application to biotechnology, and enjoy working in a multi-discinplinary environment.
