A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in the group of Prof. Tony Vlcek, to work on the project "Structural dynamics and photoinduced electron transfer".
The project combines synthesis of photoactive metal complexes and redox proteins labelled with transition-metal complexes acting as photosensitizers, investigations of photoinduced electron transfer and relaxation dynamics using advanced laser spectroscopic techniques (1- and 2-dimensional time-resolved IR spectroscopy, femtosecond stimulated Raman), and theoretical modelling. It aims to unravel fundamental aspects of excited-state electron transfer processes and their coupling with relaxation dynamics of the environment, with possible applications in photocatalysis, bioelectronics, and solar energy conversion. The research will require extensive collaboration, namely with the Lasers for Science Facility at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry in Prague.
Queen Mary is one of the top research-led universities in the UK and was ranked 9th among the UK multi-faculty universities in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014). All postdoctoral researchers are part of the QMUL Doctoral College, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities.
The postdoctoral research will focus on quantum chemical and QM/MM calculations and modelling of the structure and dynamics of electronically excited transition-metal complexes and metallolabelled redox proteins, with a particular emphasis on photoinduced electron transfer reactions and nonradiative relaxation processes. Active participation in ultrafast spectroscopic experiments at state-of-the-art laser facilities (RAL, ELI Beamlines), data analysis and interpretation, as well as computational modelling of time-resolved vibrational spectra will be another important aspect of the work.
The ideal candidate should have a PhD in computational chemistry, physical chemistry, and/or photochemistry/photophysics. Previous experience in QM/MM calculations of biomolecular or complex supramolecular systems containing heavy transition metals is an important advantage. A track record in high-quality original research and peer-reviewed publishing is essential. Duties may also include limited teaching activities (supervision of project students, tutorials, and lab demonstrating), which will enhance postdoc's experience and qualification.
This is a full-time, fixed term post available for a period of 3 years. The start date is 01/10/2018 or as soon as possible hereafter. The starting salary is £32,956 - 36,677 per annum and is inclusive of London allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and a defined benefits pension scheme.
