Microbiologist

Postdoctoral Researcher: Marine Microbiologist (Fixed Term, Full Time)
Ocean Biogeochemistry & Ecosystem Research Group, National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Southampton
    £28,200 - £32,130

    About the role:
We are seeking a Marine Microbiologist to investigate the role of microbes (principally phytoplankton and bacteria) in biogeochemical cycles, fixing and recycling the carbon in the ocean, which ultimately underpins food webs and carbon sequestration. You will assist in the OBE delivery of a portfolio of projects in this general area. These include the microbial element of COMICS, a NERC large grant focussed on carbon sequestration (www.comics.ac.uk) and an emerging suite of projects involved in linking land use changes in developing countries to coastal ocean biogeochemistry in Malaysia and Belize. You may also be involved in the measurements of additional associated geochemically relevant variables geared towards determining organic matter composition.

You will be expected to communicate your findings in both the peer-reviewed literature and at national and international conferences. The role will also involve some laboratory managements responsibilities encompassing overseeing the management of the Microbiology Laboratory with OBE.

    About you:
You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline and experience of aquatic microbial ecology and/or biogeochemistry. Strong practical skills are essential with the ability to work accurately and cleanly. Experience of cultivating aquatic microbes, use of flow cyometers and scintillation counters and of working with radioisotopes would be advantageous.

You will have management responsibilities for the Mike Fasham Microbiology Laboratory. You will be willing to participate in both sea-going research and in overseas research programmes based in countries such as Malaysia and Belize. You should be highly self-motivated, able to work both independently under your own initiative and as part of a team. You will have excellent communication skills both written in peer-reviewed literature and orally through presentations at meeting and conferences.

    About us:
The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world. With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK’s leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development.

    How to apply:
Applications are handled by UK SBS; to apply please click the 'visit website' button. Applicants who are unable to apply online should contact us by telephone.
