Research Associate - (UCL Ref 1700497) Neurology, Neuroinflammation

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work on a project under the supervision of Professor Ken Smith concerning the role of CNS blood flow and oxygenation in causing neurological deficits and tissue damage in neuroinflammatory disease, and the therapeutic benefit of manipulating vascular properties. The goal is to identify a therapeutic strategy for testing in clinical trial. The research interests of the group are described at: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ion/departments/neuroinflammation/themes/neuroinflammation. The post holder will use primarily electrophysiological (extracellular) and physiological examination, behaviour, and immunohistochemical analysis of pre-clinical models.
Applicants must have an Honours degree (minimum 2:1) in a biological science and a PhD (or submitted PhD thesis) in a relevant discipline. Experience with electrophysiology (extracellular techniques) is essential; experience with experimental neurology, behavioural examination, histological techniques and neuroinflammatory models is desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills, and good inter-personal skills with an ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting, are also required.
The post is available from January 2018 and is funded by a grant from the MS Society for 3 years in the first instance. Starting salary on the UCL Grade 7 scale £34,635 – £36,549 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance, superannuable. If the PhD has not yet been granted, the final accepted version of the thesis must have been submitted to the degree-granting university by the start date. Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,316 - £31,967 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
