KTP Associate – Model Based Medical Device Engineering

Based at Smith & Nephew (S&N) in Hull, you will lead a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project between S&N and the University of York.

Through this KTP, you will lead the transition of S&N processes into a new design and development methodology for medical devices where requirements, risks, and safety cases are captured using structured models (e.g. SysML for requirements, GSN/SACM for safety cases) as opposed to Office documents, and are shared with stakeholders using a centralised version control repository. This will allow S&N to streamline activities such as change tracking, to conduct automated model analysis, and to automate manual processes. Throughout the project, you will have opportunity to make a real difference and work with experts from various multidisciplinary departments like clinical, regulatory, quality assurance etc.

Your responsibilities will include selecting, extending or developing appropriate modelling languages and standards for the different activities (requirements management, risk and safety case analysis) involved the development lifecycle of NPWT devices. Following this activity, you are expected to design and deploy an optimal development lifecycle model for efficient collaborative modelling between S&N and their development partners.

You will preferably have a PhD in a technological / engineering area relevant to model-based software or systems engineering. Significant experience in these areas may be considered in lieu of a PhD.

You will have experience of, and active interests in software and systems engineering with a focus on model-based methodologies and technologies. You will also have strong presentation, writing, and object-oriented design and development skills, and a solid understanding of version control systems. Appreciation of principles of safety-critical systems would be beneficial. Essential personal attributes for this role include attention to detail and commitment to high quality, a collaborative ethos, positive attitude to colleagues, commitment to personal development, and ability to plan and prioritise own work to meet deadlines.

Informal enquiries regarding this position may be made to: Dr Dimitris Kolovos ([email protected]); Mr Yeswanth Gadde ([email protected]).
