Postdoctoral Scientist – Cell Plasticity & Epigenetics

    • Salary in the range of £30,000 - £39,800 (dependent upon qualifications and experience)
    • Job Ref: MI/17/68
    • Duration of post: 3 years

    About the role:
We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scientist to join the laboratory of Maximiliano M. Portal to study the molecular basis underlying epigenetic inheritance in cancer with a particular interest in the role of non-coding RNAs in the generation and propagation of molecular information through subsequent cell divisions.

With the observation that the exquisite structure of non-coding RNAs is embedded with multiple layers of information that we are only beginning to understand and the fact that these molecules play major regulatory roles in every kingdom of life, we hypothesize that non-coding RNAs modulate the flow of epigenetic information, feature at the basis of cell plasticity.

Your role within the team will consist in analysing gene expression profiles (4-SU mediated RNA metabolic labelling coupled to RNA-Seq, NET-Seq), the epigenetic landscape (ChIP-Seq, ATAC-Seq) and the role that non-coding RNAs play in shaping nuclear architecture (ChIRP-Seq, DiR-F/DiR-ID). Our approach combines mechanistic molecular analysis with high-throughput sequencing and imaging technologies with the ultimate aim of untangling the molecular systems underlying epigenetic information transfer at a single cell level.

    About you:
You should be open minded and resolute. You should have a PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or Biochemistry along with a solid interest/background in evolutionary genetics/epigenetics. Bioinformatics knowledge is desirable but not essential.

Why choose Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute?
The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute (www.cruk.manchester.ac.uk), an Institute of The University of Manchester (www.manchester.ac.uk), is a world-leading centre for excellence in cancer research. The Institute is core funded by Cancer Research UK (www.cancerresearchuk.org), the largest independent cancer research organisation in the world. We are currently situated at the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) in South Manchester and at the internationally-renowned life sciences campus at Alderley Park in Cheshire England, 15 miles from Manchester, a vibrant and dynamic city surrounded by beautiful countryside.

We are partnered with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (adjacent to the CRUK Manchester Institute, Paterson Building) in South Manchester (www.christie.nhs.uk), one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe. These factors combine to provide an exceptional environment in which to pursue basic, translational and clinical research programmes.
