Research Fellow

    Vacancy Ref: 041081
We are looking to recruit an ambitious and motivated postdoctoral research fellow on a 5y position to investigate microglial and neuroinflammatory mechanisms underlying susceptibility and resilience to neurodegenerative disease and dementia. The PDRF will join the McColl neuroimmune biology lab within the recently formed UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) at the University of Edinburgh (https://ukdri.ac.uk/centres/edinburgh).
The UK DRI will lead the UK’s dementia research effort to deliver a step-change in the understanding and treatment of dementia-causing disease and should provide a highly stimulating, interactive and cross-disciplinary environment for research.
The successful candidate will use a range of in vivo, cellular and molecular approaches (including transcriptomics) to advance understanding of how microglia and neuroimmune mechanisms contribute to neurodegenerative disease. Key guiding questions include (i) what are the consequences of microglial diversity for disease susceptibility and resilience? (ii) what mechanisms, intrinsic and non-cell autonomous, govern helpful and harmful microglial activity? (iii) can resilience mechanisms be augmented to prevent or delay disease progression?
Prior experience working with in vivo models of neurodegenerative disease and complementary skills in techniques such as behavioural analysis, cell isolation/phenotyping and molecular biology are highly desirable. Applicants should have a PhD/PhD near copmletion (or equivalent) in a relevant biomedical science. The successful candidate is expected to work well independently and as part of a team comprising other postdoctoral researchers and students working on complementary neuroimmune projects.
Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Barry McColl ([email protected])
This post is available on a fixed term basis for 5 years
    Closing Date: 29 September 2017
