Research Associate - Multi-Scale Modelling of Multi-Phase Flow in Crustal Magma Reservoirs



    Applications are invited for a Research Associate to join the Novel Reservoir Modelling and Simulation (NORMS) Group in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering. The NORMS group develops and applies new methods to accurately simulate multiphase flow and transport processes in models of complex geological reservoirs. Applications of the research are numerous and include prediction of geological CO2 sequestration, hydrocarbon recovery (including improved and enhanced recovery), groundwater flow, and contaminant transport.

    The particular focus of this post will be on the use of novel numerical methods, including dynamic adaptive meshing, to model and investigate the movement of fluids in crustal magma reservoirs. Such reservoirs are a critically important part of the plumbing system that delivers magma to volcanoes, and metal-rich fluids to ore deposits, yet the fluid dynamical processes that occur within these reservoirs remain poorly understood. There is a significant gap in knowledge that will be explored within this project.

    This is an exciting opportunity for a talented individual to work within a large multi-disciplinary research group, developing and applying advanced modelling techniques to problems of broad interest and significance in Earth Science. The post forms part of a large, cross-disciplinary and multi-institution research project (FAMOS – From Arc Magmas to Ore DepositS) funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The overall aim of this large consortium project is to understand the processes within crustal magma reservoirs that deliver the copper-rich fluids that form copper porphyry ore deposits.

    The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary team already in place within Imperial College London developing novel computational methods for modelling and simulation of multi-scale, multi-phase flows, and also with colleagues across the FAMOS consortium. S/He will be expected to regularly publish papers in international refereed journals, and give presentations at relevant international conferences.

    Applicants should possess a PhD, or equivalent, in a numerate subject area such as Mathematics, Physics, Geoscience, Computing or Engineering. They should have experience in the use and development of numerical methods for the solution of systems of PDEs, ideally on unstructured grids and for fluid dynamics applications. Experience of modelling multi-phase flow in porous media, and high performance computing would also be advantageous.
