    CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:

    Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship 2017 (1)

    APPLICATION DEADLINE: 31 MARCH 2017

The DST/NRF South African Research Chair Initiative (SARChI) in Antibiotic Resistance and One Health, under the leadership of Professor Sabiha Essack and affiliated to the Antimicrobial Research Unit, College of Health Sciences is pleased to announce a full time Post-Doctoral Fellowship commencing 1 May 2017 for a period of 2 years (renewable annually) at a remuneration rate of 200 000 ZAR.

The Research Chair in Antibiotic Resistance and One Health encompasses biomedical, clinical, drug discovery and policy-related research and aims to comprehensively delineate the molecular epidemiology, nature and extent of ABR in human, animal and environmental health in the “One Health” context to inform evidence-based strategies for its monitoring, prevention and containment by:
    1. Instituting surveillance programmes on antibiotic use and resistance in human, veterinary, agricultural and environmental health via the relevant government Ministries/Departments as appropriate,
    2. Demonstrating the phenotypic and genotypic mechanisms of antibiotic resistance by sensitivity testing and appropriate screening tests together with whole genome sequencing (WGS) and/or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing of resistance genes respectively,
    3. Delineating the genetic determinants of resistance and clonality by repetitive element palindromic (rep)-PCR/pulsed-field gel electrophoresis/multi-locus sequence typing and/or WGS respectively,
    4. Ascertaining bacterial virulence factors and their genetic determinants by WGS,
    5. Testing novel antibiotic entities against resistant bacteria and evaluating available innovator and generic antibiotics for the active antibiotic content in the context of spurious/falsely-labelled/ falsified/counterfeit (SFFC) drugs,
    6. Mobilizing relevant national government departments to improve capacities of their national systems to contain and decelerate the evolution and progress of ABR in the “One Health” context by application research output and evidence generated above.

    Eligibility Criteria:
    The applicant must:
    1. Have completed a PhD in the past 3 years.
    2. Be conversant with whole genome sequencing and bio-informatics.
    3. Not be in full-time, salaried employment.

    Application Documents:
    1. A letter of motivation
    2. A summary research proposal of 2 pages aligned to the project described above
    3. Curriculum vitae
    4. Full academic record
    5. The contact details of 2 academic referees.

    • Fellowships and scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, taking into account academic performance, research potential and research outputs (if applicable).
    • Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to co-supervise PhD and Masters students.
    • Postdoctoral Fellows may undertake limited, remunerated, undergraduate teaching, supervision and practical demonstration duties as dictated by the relevant Human Resources Policies.
    • Renewal is required annually and is subject to performance.
    • Preference will be given to applicants with a science/health sciences background.

The deadline for applications is 31 March 2017.

Applications should be submitted via email to Professor Sabiha Essack ([email protected]) with the subject line: ABR SARCHI Post-Doctoral Application 2017.
