This is an exciting opportunity for a researcher with skills in scientific computing to join an internationally leading university research group. The aim of the project is to have an active role in the full lifecycle of a surgical planning system for epilepsy neurosurgery.
The main purpose of this post is to develop novel methods for automated and interactive planning of neurosurgical interventions and to implement cutting edge real-time visualization techniques for patient specific multi-modal data. The project has a strong translational focus, and excellent software development skills are required to design, document, implement, test and deliver a working planning tool for daily clinical use at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN).
This post is funded for 24 months in the first instance.

Candidates must have a PhD, equivalent qualification, or equivalent industrial experience, in image computing, medical image analysis, computer vision or a closely related field. Candidates must possess a first or upper second undergraduate degree, or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a related subject and be able to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Candidates must have demonstrable experience of C++ programming and software development in a collaborative development environment. Familiarity with version control using software such as Subversion or Git is preferable. An in-depth working knowledge of medical image analysis and/or image-guided surgery, as evidenced by a PhD or equivalent degree or equivalent industrial experience is essential. A demonstrable interest in biomechanical modelling and tissue dynamics is preferable. Experience with GPU programming, for example CUDA or OpenCL is desirable. In addition, experience of developing clinical-grade software-based medical devices (including knowledge and experience of standard software design and development processes for CE marking and/or FDA approval) is desirable.
To be appointed at Grade 8 (Senior Research Associate) candidates must be able to demonstrate experience leading a team of researchers and have some evidence of being invited to present at international conferences. Experience of serving on peer-review committees would be desirable.
