      Prof. Edwin Michael

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available immediately in the inter-disciplinary Global Epidemiology and Biostatistics Group led by Prof. Edwin Michael at the University of Notre Dame in the Department of Biological Sciences and the Eck Institute for Global Health, to develop new mathematical and computational frameworks for modeling the population dynamics and control of major tropical parasitic infections.

The successful candidate for the position must be proficient in mathematical model construction and analysis using both analytical and numerical methods, as well as have strong programming and computer science skills.

Knowledge and experience in infectious disease modelling, data discovery using machine learning, and Bayesian data-model assimilation methods will be important, as among key objectives of our work is the application of models to diverse data to improve learning of disease dynamics models, inform effective control and eradication strategies, and guide development of new computing approaches to discovery of models, data and interventions.

The candidate will have an opportunity to work with our computer science partner, IBM Research, in developing a cognitive computational application based on machine learning algorithms to implement these methods and tools. The successful candidate will also be expected to work with group members and faculty within the Department of Biology, and at Applied Computational Mathematics and Statistics, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and the Center for Research Computing within the University. Our field and policy-related partners currently include the WHO, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Carter Center and The Task Force for Global as well as individual national Ministries of Health in Africa and elsewhere.

We are looking for creative, self-motivated individuals with ability and aptitude to pursue challenging, computationally and mathematically complex problems in a fast paced research environment.

Current disease applications range from complex vector-borne macroparasitic diseases, including lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis, to microparasitic diseases, such as malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis and melioidosis. The lab website can be accessed at http://sites.nd.edu/michael-lab/

    A suitable candidate should have:
    • Completed a PhD or equivalent degree in biomathematics, disease ecology, theoretical physics, applied engineering, or in computer science.
    • Research experience in mathematical modelling of infectious disease transmission is essential.
    • Experience with Bayesian statistical methods for model calibration is an advantage.
    • Strong programming skills in Matlab and C and in parallel computing are essential, and experience with programming in R an advantage.

    Location: Notre Dame, Indiana, USA

Tenure: The position is available immediately for 1 year in the first instance, with the possibility of extension for another year.

Salary: Based on NIH guidelines for postdoctoral fellow salaries
