Software Developer/Designer for Urban Modelling

The Geospatial Research Institute at the University of Canterbury is part of New Zealand’s Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities - Ko ngā wā kāinga hei whakamāhorahora National Science Challenge (http://www.buildingbetter.nz/). In particular we are leading the Next Generation Information for Better Outcomes strategic research area. The aim of this project is to drive the development of better homes, towns and cities through improved use of information, with a specific focus on geospatial data. Among the questions it will address are: What data are needed and available; who owns the data and how, and by whom is it being used; what are the access and intellectual property implications of privately owned data? In areas of limited information and resources, which data is essential to collect/collate? How can the essential new data be collected, standardised and managed to make it interoperable with other building and property data so that it is useful for end users? In addition the projhect will develop a series geospatial urban planning tools primarily using open source software to assist better decision-making on urban planning (redevelopment, transport, and urban resilience strategies) in New Zealand cities.

The project includes a two and a half year position and is available immediately:

1. Software Developer / Designer for Urban Modelling. The developer/designer will have a Masters (and ideally a PhD) with a proven record of developing software tools to a high quality standard, and good understanding of Java Script, SQL, and other relevant programming languages, experience using and developing open source analytical tools and expertise in GIS (ideally with experience using Quantum GIS) and/or spatial methods.

The project also includes a Postdoctoral Fellow and a PhD scholarship.

You will be part of the National Science Challenge 11 (NSC11) research project, working with partners from government agencies at a national and local level in New Zealand. You will also collaborate with the Greening the Greyfields project researchers funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information (CRCSI) also working with partners from government agencies. You will be based in Christchurch and be part of research also focusing on other New Zealand cities, such as Auckland and Wellington.
