UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 2

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 2 within the Spatial Dynamics Lab.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and talented individuals for a post–doctorate research position which will contribute to research project on moments of stress during active travel. The position will start on 1 January 2024.

“Transforming how we travel”, i.e. a modal shift to sustainable transport, is one of six vital high impact sectors listed in the Irish government’s Climate Action Plan 2023. A modal shift to increase cycling, which is a form of active and sustainable travel, is important not just for the green transition, but also for the health, sustainability and liveability of urban and rural communities in Ireland. However, to support more cycling journeys, suitable cycling infrastructure is necessary. This is especially important for school routes, as research suggests that cycling to school may lead to a lifelong behaviour routine. One of the major factors determining a modal shift to cycling is perceived road safety. However, the perceived safety of specific cycling infrastructure is often unknown. Recent advances in wearable technologies allow a number of physiological biomarkers of stress to be measured continuously. These biomarkers can be used to identify moments of stress, which can be correlated to the location and surroundings of an individual during a cycling trip. The aim of the SHIFT project is to measure moments of stress in cyclists to provide insights on the impact of cycling infrastructure and traffic on perceived road safety.

The primary purpose of the role is to develop new or advanced research skills and competences, on the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications and scholarly dissemination, the development of funding proposals, and the supervision and mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

    Salary: €49,790 - €54,153 per annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience

Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on the 2nd of October 2023.
