    Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light.     About the Role

    We now have an opportunity for an Electrical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team to provide electrical engineering design support to the technical systems of the Diamond facility.

    The Engineering team plays a key role in the design, development and construction of the Accelerators and Beamlines that generate and transport light to the scientific samples.

    Further responsibilities will include:

    Assisting / producing electrical system designs for a variety of projects including, precision positioning controls for optical systems, vacuum control systems, machinery controls, safety circuits and LV systems.
    Developing skills in / using electrical CAD software and Auto CAD to produce schematics, hook-ups, and other electrical design documentation.
    Assisting in / carrying out procurement of equipment through commercial suppliers.
    Maintaining and updating engineering drawings and documentation on projects.
    Developing your awareness of relevant British, European International and company standards and understand the implications on design.
    As the Electrical Design Engineer, you will additionally be responsible for;

    Developing and applying expertise in technologies such as programmable logic controllers, motion controls, distributed I/O, instrumentation, and pneumatic controls.
    Producing high quality detailed electrical drawings.
    Contributing to design reviews and system verification and validation.
    Successful applicants will be considered at either Graduate or Design Engineer level, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.

    About You

    Suitable candidates will have a degree in an Engineering Discipline with an electrical bias.

    You will also demonstrate the following skills:

    Ability to produce designs and specifications to appropriate standards, e.g. electrical diagrams, parts lists and schedules.
    Good understanding of Electrical engineering fundamentals.
    Grasp of essential health and safety context for all work.
    Regulatory / safety awareness.
    Basic electrical safety awareness.
    To be considered at the Design Engineer level you will be an experienced electrical engineer with experience of working within a QA system, and of design, manufacture, assembly, testing and commissioning of systems. You will also demonstrate understanding of control systems and electrical designs, with good working knowledge of AutoCAD system.

    You will also demonstrate design ability in at least one of the following area’s:

    Electrical Rack design.
    Precision motion control systems using stepper, servo, DC motors and piezo actuators.
    Vacuum control systems.
    Safety circuits for personnel and machinery.
    Low Voltage systems.
    Programmable logic controllers.
    Distributed I/O.
    Pneumatic control systems.
