Postdoctoral Research Associate in Physical Chemistry (Fixed Term)

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a 2-year Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) under the supervision of Professor Erwin Reisner in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. The project will support the development of biohybrid systems for the controlled synthesis of organic chemicals at high efficiency using sunlight by combining the strength of synthetic and biological technologies. An integrated platform will be developed that incorporates efficient light harvesting by semiconductors to drive a network of synthetic and biocatalysts to convert carbon dioxide to bespoke complex chemical products. The PDRA will oversee the physical chemistry activities, which involve the in situ characterisation and mechanistic studies of the catalysis networks. Specifically, the PDRA will investigate the material-catalyst interface using a range of techniques, in particular spectroscopy (e.g., infrared and Raman), within a cross-disciplinary team with the ambition to develop direct photon-to-chemical conversion technologies.

The PDRA should have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in Physical Chemistry or a closely related discipline. A strong background in spectroscopy, photochemistry, electrochemistry or catalysis would be required for the position.

Start date: January to October 2023.
