The School of Politics and International Relations (SPIRe) at University College Dublin is looking for a two-year post-doc in conflict studies with a focus on Northern Ireland. Experience in the conduct of interviews with participants in conflict is desirable. The candidate will be expected to work independently to set up, implement, and analyze open-ended interviews in Northern Ireland.
The ideal candidate will be proactive and persistent in the pursuit of difficult-to-access populations. They will be sensitive to working in conflict settings. Above all, they are expected to approach and interact with conflict participants in a friendly, calm, and nonjudgmental manner.
SPIRe is ranked among the top 100 departments of Political Science. The post-doc will be part of a team implementing a project on female agency in conflict. The project investigates the role of women in conflict through the eyes of both male and female participants. Besides the collection of primary interview data, it involves computational analysis of the data, implemented by other team members and the Principal Investigator, Dr. Stephanie Dornschneider-Elkink.
The candidate will receive a budget for travel and participation in annual meetings of major conferences.
This is an academic research role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.
Expected tasks
Conduct open-ended interviews with male and female conflict participants in Northern Ireland
Analyse the interviews through qualitative methods
Collect and analyze interviews from English news outlets
Participate in international conferences
Co-author articles on the project
Contribute to team meetings
Salary: €39,522 - €40,083 per annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience
