      Prof. Dr. Christian Schürch

At the University Hospital Tübingen, Institute of Pathology,

    Postdoc / Lab Manager position (f/m/d; E 13 TV-L, 100%)

is available immediately, for a duration of three years, with the possibility of extension.

The Advanced Tissue Imaging Lab (PI: Christian M. Schürch, MD, PhD; www.schurchlab.com) is looking for a highly motivated and organized postdoctoral fellow / lab manager. Our research group is investigating the tumor microenvironment (TME) to improve immunotherapies for cancer patients with I) lymphoma, II) melanoma, and III) solid neoplasms. We previously demonstrated that coordinated "cellular neighborhoods" play important roles in antitumoral immunity (Schürch et al., Cell 2020; https://t1p.de/iglh4) and that the spatial distances between effector immune cells, regulatory immune cells and tumor cells are associated with immunotherapy outcomes (Phillips … Schürch*, Nolan*, Nat Commun 2021; https://t1p.de/82uvd). The successful candidate will contribute to the discovery of novel biomarkers and the implementation of more simplified spatial scores into clinical decision making to improve prediction for cancer immunotherapy.

    What we are looking for
You are curious, self-driven, highly motivated, enjoy analytical thinking and have a passion for medical and patient-oriented science. You have a strong academic background and have a keen interest in solving clinically relevant problems to help cancer patients and their physicians. You hold a Ph.D. degree (or similar) in a quantitative discipline such as computer science, bioinformatics, physics, statistics, biotechnology, or related discipline. Business fluency in German and scientific proficiency in English are required. Ideally, you have strong programming skills in Python, R, Matlab or another programming language. Moreover, you show excellent collaborative and communicative skills to execute joint projects with other laboratories. You are open to working in a multicultural team and supervising students and laboratory technicians, can conduct experiments independently, and you show a proactive attitude in the development and implementation of new techniques.

    What we offer
The Advanced Tissue Imaging Lab is a recently established research group at the University Hospital. The prospective candidate will have access to state-of-the-art omics technologies including CODEX highly multiplexed microscopy (https://t1p.de/516vs), genomics facilities of the Institute of Pathology, laser-capture microdissection, proteomics equipment, animal facilities, in vivo imaging (Werner Siemens Imaging Center), etc. The projects will be integrated into a highly collaborative framework in the Institute of Pathology and the University Hospital, and many projects will be executed in collaboration with other laboratories. Therefore, co-mentorship by a second principal investigator is an option. Furthermore, the prospective candidate will have access to Dr. Schürch’s vast scientific network with collaborations in Germany (Heidelberg, Bonn), Switzerland (Basel, Bern), the UK (London), and the United States (Stanford, UCSF, UCSD, Fred Hutch), and will have the opportunity to visit collaborating laboratories and international conferences.
