    About Us:
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth, and environmental sciences.

    About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a post-doctoral research associate to drive forward our research into understanding single atom catalysts at a fundamental level.

The primary focus of the study will be modification of single atom catalysts supported on magnetite single crystals. The successful candidate will be based at Diamond’s beamline I09, which is the sole site in the world for performing in situ X-ray standing waves using photoemission and one of the few beamlines in which energy scanned photoelectron diffraction is possible. The high-performance instrument is ideally suited for understanding adsorption on surfaces at a fundamental level, particularly in performing chemically resolved structural measurements with precision down to hundredths of an angstrom.

This project is in collaboration with universities based in the UK, Europe, and the USA, as such the successful candidate will be expected to work within an international collaboration.

    The role is responsible for:
    • Working with the beamline team and other Diamond staff, and participating in user support, beamline commissioning and the development of offline research capabilities.
    • Developing as an independent researcher, and participating in the drafting of beamtime proposals for their primary project.
    • Participating in beamtimes not only at Diamond, but other synchrotrons around the world, as well as presenting research findings at international conferences.

The selected candidate will be expected to participate in the supervision and projects of PhD students associated with the beam line on relevant studies

    About You
You will hold an appropriate Science Degree and PhD along with proven relevant experience.

Suitable candidates should also be familiar with:
    • The use of ultra-high vacuum equipment and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
    • Computer programming
    • Photoelectron diffraction and / or scanning tunnelling microscopy
    • Performing calculations on high performance computing resources

Prior experience in the growth of organic ultrathin films, exploiting large central facilities (especially synchrotron light sources) and of drafting scientific articles for peer review will be beneficial.

    Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities.

    To Apply
Please use the online application process to apply and tell us why you believe you are suitable for this role.

Diamond is a thriving international organisation, attracting a diverse range of talented individuals from around the world. Our staff currently comprises 44 nationalities and we welcome applications from everyone interested in joining us.

Closing date for applications will be the 19th June 2022.
