About the Role
Crystal structures derived from X-ray diffraction have been central to our understanding of the function of proteins essential to life and critical in the development of new medicines including those for Covid 19. Recently the importance of determining these structures at near-physiological or room temperatures rather than under cryo-cooled conditions has become apparent. However, a major challenge is that only partial datasets are obtained at room temperature and the best means to combine many of these partial datasets into a complete dataset and present the results to the end user have not yet been established.
Notable challenges faced by multi-crystal data processing include identification of a consensus symmetry, and automated identification of the optimal subset(s) of data to use for downstream analysis, accounting for the potential presence of non-isomorphism and radiation damage.
We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic scientist to develop novel algorithms, software tools and statistical techniques for the analysis of multi-crystal X-ray diffraction data sets. The appointed person will work closely with experimental scientists in the development of new and existing software to improve the quality of automated feedback provided to experimental users.
In this role, you will:
• Develop and test new and existing software, including novel algorithms for the analysis of multi-crystal data sets.
• Report to the project supervisor, you will contribute to the on-going research within the group.
• Be responsible for carrying out work to fulfil the aims of the research proposal detailed in the Job Description appendix.
• Manage the day-to-day running of a research project.
• Identify research objectives and carry out appropriate research activities within a given timescale.
• Attend internal scientific and administrative meetings with scientific collaborators.
• Lead in the analysis and authoring of scientific results in international peer-reviewed journals.
• Keep up with latest results and international research directions, especially in interest for the research project associated with this post.
About You
You will have an appropriate Science Degree and an appropriate PhD together with proven relevant experience. You will also need to be able to communicate and interact with staff on all levels with good organisation skills and the ability to work flexibly. Experience in X-ray diffraction and Unix operating systems will be advantageous.
The successful candidate will likely have experience in:
• Statistical analysis of data
• Algorithm and software development.
• Numerical and scientific computing with Python
