    JOB DESCRIPTION
    As part of the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project MAESTRIA (Machine Learning and Artificial intelligence for Early detection of Stroke and Atrial Fibrillation) we aim to develop novel ways to detect atrial fibrillation and to identify novel therapeutic targets to personalize atrial fibrillation (AF) management, by integrating data from various sources. For this project the Department of Physiology within the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) at Maastricht University, has a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of artificial intelligence, applied to the analysis of cardiac arrhythmias, specifically atrial fibrillation.

    In Maastricht we particularly focus on determining electrophysiological parameters as biomarkers to rigorously determine the complexity and progression of human AF from early to advanced stages of atrial remodeling. Tasks include the automated detection of AF in various types of electrocardiograms (EC), the prediction of AF treatment outcome based on clinical patient characteristics and advanced ECG features, and the identification of driving electrical conduction mechanisms of AF in electro-anatomical mapping data.

    The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for the development and implementation of appropriate techniques from the field of artificial intelligence to train, test and validate models for these tasks, ranging from multimodal prediction models to models for pattern recognition, using for instance a deep learning approach. You will work in close collaboration with your supervisors, other postdocs and PhD candidates with different disciplinary backgrounds. We join our efforts to integrate large amounts of electrophysiological data into state-of-the-art computational tools for personalized AF management.

    REQUIREMENTS
    Essential:
    • You have completed a PhD in data science and/or artificial intelligence;
    • You have gained knowledge of various machine learning techniques, particularly artificial neural networks and deep learning and would like to further develop this knowledge;
    • In previous roles you have worked with the application of data science and artificial intelligence in the context of biomedical signals;
    • You enjoy the process of conceiving and writing papers (in English) and have the ambition to produce high quality research outcomes.

    Desirable:
    • You are familiar with concepts from the field of computational cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac measurement modalities.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    Fixed-term contract: 3 years.
    We offer an interdisciplinary and collaborative postdoc project embedded into a highly international institute, which is one of the leading research institutions in the field of cardiac electrophysiology. The position is temporary for the duration of 3 years.

    Depending on experience and qualification, the maximum gross monthly salary is € 4.490,- in accordance with scale 10 of the Dutch university collective bargaining agreement. Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%. If you do not live in the Maastricht area, please consider applying. For this you will receive a monthly home-work and internet allowance. If you work full-time, you are entitled to 29 days of vacation per year.
