Postdoctoral Research Assistant



    We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant within our team.

    An exciting opportunity has arisen to be involved in a key, industry-funded collaborative pre-clinical development programme. The underlying technology is also part of a University spin out-in-progress. The successful candidate will play a key role in technology development and success of the programme with a longer-term opportunity to be part of a biotech start-up.

    Working in a focused team you will be involved in manufacturing Virus-like-particle prototype vaccines, setting up and conducting quality control assays, and analysing immunological responses in vaccinated animals. The project work packages include establishment of principle upstream process, development of downstream process, prototype manufacture, in-vitro assay development, and analysis of vaccine performance in an in-vivo model. Duties will be carried out in coordination with the PI as well as a technician dedicated full time to this program.

    Your priorities will include:
    • Work components will include bacterial expression of recombinant proteins, purification using a variety of chromatography methods, ELISA and bioassay development using mammalian cell culture.
    • Quality control using DLS, NAGE, circular dichroism, endotoxin assays, formulation and stability studies.
    • Liaising with outsourced staff performing specialized components (cloning, EM, mass spec, in-vivo sampling)
    • Work proceeds according to a minutely defined milestone-driven timeline
    • Delivery of milestones to target is essential for successful project delivery.

    Who we’re looking for:
    • PhD in a biomedical science
    • Home Office Personal Licence for animal handling
    • Experience in protein chromatography, bacterial expression
    • Independent problem solving to counter unexpected obstacles
    • Excellent communication skills

    This is a fixed term position -18 months in first instance.

    Appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the Grade 7 salary scale is dependent upon you having been awarded a PhD. An appointment may be considered if you are shortly expected to be awarded a PhD. The initial appointment would be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale (Spinal Point 25 - 28 £29,614 - £32,344).
