We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic PhD candidate to join our research team. The project will investigate the changes that bacteria undergo as they adapt to the lung and the low oxygen environment associated with chronic infection. This is a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI)-funded PhD scholarship with funding for four years, including PhD stipend and EU tuition fees.
Chronic lung infections are associated with poor quality of life and mortality for people with underlying respiratory conditions such as cystic fibrosis (CF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The process of chronic colonisation allows pathogens to evolve and adapt over time to cope with changing selection pressures, co-infecting species and antimicrobial therapies. The mechanisms behind this bacterial evolution are poorly understood. The aim of this project is to investigate the adaptive mechanisms that bacterial pathogens undergo during chronic colonisation. This PhD project will involve a range of techniques including microbiology, cell biology, proteomics, transcriptomics, cloning, mutagenesis, protein:protein interactions and examination of host-pathogen interactions.
Qualifications: Applicants should have a BSc (Hons) or MSc in a relevant biomedical discipline, e.g. Biochemistry, Microbiology , Biotechnology (minimum award 2.1); or should expect to graduate in 2022 with a BSc Hons or MSc and a track record indicative of a 2.1 award or higher.
Skills and Interests: The ideal candidate will have a passion for biomedical research. He/She will ideally have experience in cell culture, microbial cell culture or proteomic analysis. The successful applicant will work in a large multidisciplinary team and a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate strong communication skills and a high level of initiative and organisation.
