Applications are invited for a Temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 2 within UCD School of Medicine/Charles Institute of Dermatology
The UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology has an ongoing research program led by Prof. Des Tobin to investigate pigment cell (melanocyte) biology in health and disease. Diversity of human skin colour is regulated at intrinsic (i.e., constitutive) and extrinsic (i.e., facultative) levels. The former refers to an individual’s genetically-determined amount/type of melanin, while the latter refers to the sensitivity/propensity of our skin to respond to stimulated pigmentation from sources that can be intrinsic (e.g., secreted melanotropic molecules) or extrinsic (e.g., UVR). Importantly, human skin phototype reflects relative activity, rather than absolute number, of melanocytes.
As an interface tissue, human skin is subjected to a wide range of stimuli, some of which induce stable, reversible and/or heritable, changes in how genes function, a way that does not result in DNA sequence change. Our knowledge of such ‘epigenetic’ control of pigmentation in human skin is still in its infancy and is the focus of this project. We will ask if epigenetic regulation of human skin pigmentation at baseline is similar or different to stimulated pigmentation, and if different, whether differential regulation is influenced by particular epigenetic events.
