The individual will be hired to carry out research funded by the SFI Research Centre AMBER. The goal of the project is to develop an advanced benzocyclobutene (BCB) based polymer specifically for semiconductor applications. BCB based materials are a class of dielectric polymers with a wide variety of applications in the semiconductor industry. For example, BCB can be employed as a photoresist in microlithography processes, can be used to provide mechanical stress relief and as a dielectric material in chips. The majority of previous studies on the polymer have focussed on the effect of cure temperature, temperature ramp rates and cure time on a limited set of properties of the film and have analysed the material from either an electrical-, chemical- or mechanical-centric viewpoint. Undoubtedly, all of these are intricately linked, however, to date no study has clearly explained their co-dependency. An outcome of this project will be to elucidate this, providing a universal theory on the nature of an advanced BCB based polymer over a wide range of curing conditions. To meet the goals of the project, the researcher will collaborate with a multinational company with access to state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facilities.
