    About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

Diamond is a thriving international organisation, attracting a diverse range of talented individuals from around the world. Our staff currently comprises 44 nationalities and we welcome applications from everyone interested in joining us

    About the Role
The XPDF (I15-1) Beamline at Diamond is the first dedicated X-ray Pair Distribution Function instrument of its kind in Europe. This beamline performs experiments to study the local structure of materials from a vast range of scientific fields such as catalysis, energy materials, and pharmaceuticals. The beamline is nearing completion of a major upgrade which has recently commissioned a high-throughput robotic sample changer and will soon include an upgraded end-station and bespoke optimised detector.

We are seeking a PDRA with a strong background in local structure analysis and experience with PDF analysis software, such as PDFgui, DiffPy-CMI, TOPAS, RMCProfile or EPSR. Preference will be given to those with experience in the analysis of large datasets, such as from time- or spatially-resolve studies. It is expected that the successful candidate will establish in-house and external collaborations with an emphasis on total scattering / pair distribution function analysis in order to increase the range of scientific applications studied on the beamline. The post will be for three years.

    You will be responsible for:
    • Conducting world-leading research.
    • Leading in the analysis and authoring of scientific results in international peer- reviewed journals.
    • Keeping up to date with latest results and international research directions.
    • Carrying out experiments to fulfil the aims of the beamline.
    • Managing the day-to-day running of a research project.

    About You
The successful candidate will have an appropriate first Science Degree and PhD or proven relevant experience.

Successful candidates will also need the following knowledge or experience:
    • PDF analysis programs such as PDFgui, Topas and RMCProfile.
    • Windows/Linux/Unix.
    • Python/Jython/Java/C++.
    • Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction.
    • Total scattering methods.
    • Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures.

    Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities.

We take an active approach to ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of our activities at Diamond, with a dedicated commitment to ensuring we provide a fulfilling and enjoyable place to work, where all staff feel valued and recognised for their individual contribution.
