    About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth, and environmental sciences.

Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities and talented staff are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.

    About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant to work on Diamond’s I10 Beamline.

I10 is the Beamline for Advanced Dichroism Experiments (BLADE). BLADE delivers soft X-ray beam in the energy range from 0.4 to 2 keV. The research focuses on the magnetisation and the magnetic structure of novel nanostructured systems.

You will undertake research aligned within the activities of the I10 beamline team and within the wider scope of the magnetic materials group. Current activities on the beamline include thin film multiferroics and strain dependent magnetism in thin films. Other possibilities include thin film oxides and developing the technique of soft X-ray reflectivity and scattering.

Development of areas of the technical capabilities of the beamline e.g. providing suitable magnetic field sample environments, particularly in X-ray scattering would also be encouraged.

    Further responsibilities will include:
    • Manage the day-to-day running of a research project.
    • Identifying research objectives and carrying out appropriate research activities within a given timescale.
    • Attending relevant scientific meetings and presenting your research.
    • Joining internal scientific and administrative meetings with scientific collaborators.
    • Leading in the analysis and authoring of scientific results in international peer-reviewed journals.

    About You
You will have an appropriate Science Degree PhD along with proven relevant experience.

You will demonstrate knowledge / experience in the following areas:
    • At least one of the following techniques: X-ray reflectivity, X-ray diffraction, soft X-rays, X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism.
    • Use of scientific instrumentation.
    • Supporting scientists in the conduct of research in a laboratory.
    • Programming in Python, Matlab or similar.
    • Synchrotron Radiation.
    • Data and/or image analysis particularly of soft X-ray reflectivity and diffraction.
    • sample preparation and/or growth.
    • Magnetic characterization.

    Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities.

    To Apply
Please use the online application process to apply and tell us why you believe you are suitable for this role.

The closing date for applications is 12th of December 2021 with interviews scheduled for the 21st of January 2022.
