About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.
About the role
We now have an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated scientist to join the I07 beamline team with a position of Post-Doctoral Research Associate.
The I07 beamline is dedicated to the characterization of the structure and morphology of solid and liquid surfaces and interfaces, using surface x-ray diffraction, x-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering techniques. The beamline activity is centred on the study of in-situ/operando processes in a variety of different environments, ranging from 2D materials in Ultra-High Vacuum to catalytic reactions under realistic conditions and electrochemical systems.
The successful candidate will be working on the in-house research program on in-situ/operando characterization of interfacial chemical reactions. In particular the position will focus on the study of the surface structure, morphology and dynamics at the microscale during chemical and electrochemical processes. The work will be carried out in collaboration with a motivated beamline team and will include the design of new experiments and the development of novel data collection strategy.
The successful candidate will also participate in in-house research programmes, will contribute to the operation of the beamline and will provide support to external users as local contact. You will also be able to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the beamline to propose and develop your own research program and you'll have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with the widely international user community of I07.
About you
You should hold a Ph.D. in a scientific field relevant for the post (e.g. physics, physical-chemistry, chemistry or material science) or equivalent.
You will be a motivated scientist with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
You will have well-developed experimental skills and the ability of conducting high quality original research.
A background in surface/interface science, electrochemistry or catalysis is required as well as a knowledge of surface x-ray diffraction/scattering techniques.
Knowledge of UHV techniques, experience with surface characterization techniques (AFM, STM, ellipsometry, LEED, RHEED...), experience in software development and programming are an important assets.
Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities.
To Apply
Applicants are required to outline their motivation for applying and suitability for this role via the online application process. Please also state where you saw this role advertised.
