Applications are invited for an MRC-funded postdoctoral research assistant to use protein chemical and biophysical methods to exploit and develop the exciting potentials of RNA aptamers as new reagents for fundamental studies of the mechanisms of protein aggregation into amyloid fibrils in vitro. The project will focus on two important amyloid disorders, Alzheimer’s (involving the assembly of Abeta peptide) and dialysis related amyloidosis (involving the aggregation of beta-2-microglobulin). Working alongside a second post-doctoral researcher with expertise in the selection and characterisation of RNA aptamers, the person employed will bring protein chemical and biophysical expertise to the team and use these skills to determine how the aptamers selected recognise their targets (monomers, protofibrillar species or fibrils) and explore the effectiveness of aptamers as diagnostic agents or inhibitors of amyloid formation. The project is funded jointly between the laboratories of Professors Sheena Radford and Peter Stockley within the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology at the University of Leeds. You will be based in the laboratory of Professor Sheena Radford and, working closely with the second post-doctoral researcher in Professor Stockley’s laboratory, develop and test the aptamers selected. You should have a PhD in biochemistry, biophysics or a related area. Experience in protein assembly mechanisms or protein structure-function relationships using biophysical methods is essential. University Grade 7 (£29,853 - £35,646 p.a.) Due to funding limitations it is likely that the appointment will be made at or below £30,747 p.a. Informal enquiries to Professor Sheena E Radford, email s.e.radford@leeds.ac.uk. See also http://www.astbury.leeds.ac.uk and http://bmbsgi10.leeds.ac.uk.
