Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL) in collaboration with the University of Leeds (UL) to undertake research and to advance knowledge in a project entitled “Why do chloroplasts and mitochondria retain their own genetic systems?” • The aims of the research are to understand how changes in photosynthetic and respiratory electron transport affect expression of chloroplast and mitochondrial genes; to identify and characterize conserved, bacterial-type regulatory components that couple electron transport gene expression in chloroplasts and mitochondria; and to explore the function of cytoplasmic genomes using chloroplast and mitochondrial genes relocated to the nucleus. Experimental work will include characterisation of mutant phenotypes in Arabidopsis, Physcomitrella, and Saccharomyces, together with protein structural and functional studies. The research will take place under the supervision of Professor John F. Allen, Dr Brendan Curran and Dr Norbert Krauss at Queen Mary and Dr Andrew Cuming at the University of Leeds. The position is made available with the support of a research grant from the Leverhulme Trust. Candidates for this position should have a PhD in a relevant field such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or Genetics. This is a full-time, fixed term post available for up to 36 months. The salary is £33,659 per annum and is inclusive of London allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, final salary pension scheme and an interest–free season ticket loan.
