- are you a bright and enthusiastic PhD student working in a food-related area? - do you have an interest in communicating scientific research? - would you like the opportunity to work within parliament? If so, this opportunity may be for you. What does the fellowship entail? The successful applicant will spend 3 months working within the POST offices at Westminster, researching and writing briefing material in the form of a POSTnote for MPs and Peers that may be used by them to inform public policy areas. Food science is a multi-disciplinary area, and there are many diverse areas of close interest to public policy eg global food production, nanotechnology, GM and food labelling. This is a tremendous opportunity to gain experience in science writing and a direct insight into how Parliament functions. Who is eligible to apply? Applicants should be in the second or third year of their PhD studies, undertaking research studies related to Food Science and Technology, at a UK university. Students who are writing up their theses but have not yet graduated are eligible to apply. How to apply Each applicant must submit a summary (no longer than 2 A4 pages) of any aspect of scientific research that you consider and can demonstrate to be relevant to public policy. Your application need not be based around your PhD subject area. About the scheme The Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST), the professional body for food scientists, collaborates with the Parliamentary Office of Science & Technology (POST) yearly in this initiative to aid scientific research in public policy areas. POST is the UK Parliament’s in-house source of independent, balanced and objective analysis of public policy issues relating to science and technology and provides information to the Houses of Lords and Commons. |
