Postdoctoral Position
Department of Signaling and Functional Genomics, German Cancer Research Center

The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 2100 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The Department of Signaling and Functional Genomics
(Kst. B110) is seeking a
Postdoctoral Position
(Ref-No. 22/2010)

Project Description:
We are seeking highly motivated applicants to join an EU-funded project on the analysis of signaling pathways implicated in cancer. Cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation and survival are regulated by diverse cellular signaling pathways. We use genomic and genetic approaches in model organisms and human cells to analyze gene functions on a genome-wide scale (Bartscherer et al., Cell 2006; Mueller et al., Nature 2005). A particular focus is on the analysis of conserved and disease-related signaling pathways.

The applicant will be part of an EU-funded collaborative project undertaken in research groups in five European countries (http://www.cancerpathways.eu). The project focuses on the analysis of developmental molecular pathways in Drosophila. Since cancer is often caused by the aberrant activation of conserved signal transduction pathways, we aim to use Drosophila as a model for human oncogenic pathways. The project will involve the establishment of high-throughput assays for the analysis of developmental pathways in Drosophila and the identification of novel signaling components by large-scale RNAi and compound screening methods. Cell biological and genetic methods will be applied to follow up the characterization of the identified signaling components.

Your profile:
The applicant should be highly motivated, enthusiastic about science and hold a Ph.D. in biology or a related field. The applicant should also have a proven track record in molecular and cellular biology. In addition strong quantitative skills for the analysis of high-throughput data sets and experience in genomic analysis of cellular signaling pathways are necessary. Experience in Drosophila genetics is an advantage.

Please send a CV, a list of publications and contact details of 2-3 referees along with a cover letter stating your reasons for applying.

The position is limited to 12 months with the possibility for an extension. The position can in principle be part-time.

For further information please contact Mr. Prof. Dr. Michael Boutros, phone 06221/42-1951.

The German Cancer Research Center is committed to increase the percentage of female scientists and encourages female applicants to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, a person with disabilities will be given preference.
