University of Southampton School of Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton Post-doctoral Research Fellow: Marine Molecular Biologist £27,319 - £33,599 pa | Ref: 4249-10-E The School of Ocean and Earth Science are looking to appoint a marine molecular biologist to work on the HERMIONE project (http://www.eu-hermione.net/). You will be required to take on the processing and analysis of a diverse range of benthic megafauna species from varied taxa that have recently been collected on the RRS James Cook research cruise to the Whittard Canyon. You should have a PhD in Biology and have practical experience of the construction of molecular phylogenies of marine organisms and you will be expected to have both laboratory experience of species identification using molecular barcoding techniques as well as the construction of phylogeny predictions using toplogies generated from maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference reconstructions. Sequencing of barcoding amplicons will be carried out by an external third party and so practical experience of conventional sequencing technology is not required. In addition you will have a practical or theoretical understanding of Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLPs) which will be used, as appropriate, to explore fine scale genetic diversity within different populations of selected benthic megafaunal species. You should be able to plan your own research, manage project resources and possess excellent interpersonal skills. The post is initially for 15-months and is available from 1 April 2010. The salary is in the range of £27,319 to £33,599 per annum. Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Chris Hauton on 023 8059 5784 or email: ch10@noc.soton.ac.uk To apply online visit www.jobs.soton.ac.uk Alternatively telephone +44 (0)23 8059 2750. Please quote the reference number 4249-10-E in all correspondence. The closing date for applications is 23 March 2010 at 12 noon. At the University of Southampton we promote equality and value diversity. |
