Postdoctoral Fellowship in Nursing Research
School of Nursing, University of Kansas Medical Center

The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators® (NDNQI®) is managed by the University of Kansas School of Nursing (KUSON), under contract to the American Nurses Association (ANA). NDNQI has an open postdoctoral research position. The appointment is for one year, with a potential renewal for a second year. The position is in Kansas City which has a very affordable standard of living.

NDNQI is a rich and robust data resource for investigators interested in nursing systems and outcomes research. NDNQI is a longitudinal database, with data on nurse staffing, and patient outcomes, such as pressure ulcers, patient falls, pediatric IV infiltration, pain assessment, and patient assaults. Quarterly data have been collected since 1998. Currently, over 1,500 hospitals across the United States report to NDNQI, including over 90% of ANCC Magnet facilities. Since 2003, we also have conducted an annual RN survey, which is focused on elements of job satisfaction, assessments of the quality of care provided on units, and nursing demographics. Approximately 750 hospitals and 200,000 RNs participated in the survey in 2009. The research potential of NDNQI is extensive because of the ability to merge with other databases through Medicare or American Hospital Association identifiers provided by all NDNQI participant hospitals. For more information on NDNQI, please visit our website at www.nursingquality.org.

The postdoctoral fellow will be an integral part of the interdisciplinary NDNQI research team, which includes faculty with degrees in nursing, sociology, and statistics. Half of the incumbent’s time will be devoted to data analysis and development initiatives for NDNQI and half on the incumbent’s own research and proposal development. Support for at least one professional conference per year will be provided.

Investigators interested in applying for the NDNQI postdoctoral position should have completed a PhD in nursing research by June 2010. Applicants should have experience working with large data sets, a thorough knowledge of quality improvement, and a proficiency in SAS. In addition, expertise in multivariate statistical methods, preferably with experience in hierarchical analysis is desired.
