The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, and the University of the Free State have established a METAGENOMICS PLATFORM at the University of the Free State. The platform focuses on the detection, cloning and expression of genes of potential commercial interest, high throughput sequencing, and bioremedial applications of microbes from extreme environments, with a special focus on the deep mines and mining environment of South Africa. An opportunity exists for POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS to become involved in this exciting research endeavor. Expertise in the construction of large and small insert libraries, high throughput screening, bioinformatics OR microbial isolation, identification and population (incl all phylogenetic analysis) studies are an ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE POSTDOC position. The successful candidate will drive his/her own project within the context of the platform and be actively involved with practical guidance to PhD students. An amount of R180 000 per year with additional airfare is offered for the successful candidate. The appointment will be for one year with the possibility of extension for a maximum of two more years, based on performance. Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged groups.
