    Postdoctoral Scientist - Neurobiology
Starting Salary £28,007 to £30,791 per annum
Band Salary £27,355 to £32,648 per annum
MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge UK

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is one of the birthplaces of molecular biology and is an internationally renowned centre for fundamental biomedical research.

The LMB has a strong track record in training Postdoctoral Fellows who have gone on to become leading Scientists. We also have an excellent record of innovative basic research leading to applications in medicine. Scientists are drawn to the LMB from all over the world, thus creating a lively and international community for the exchange of ideas and technical innovation. Following our move to a new laboratory in 2013, we are able to provide state-of-the-art facilities in which innovative medical research, translation and collaboration can flourish.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scientist position in the laboratory of Dr William Schafer at the MRC LMB, Cambridge to work within a programme aimed at understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of behaviour. Specifically to undertake research to investigate gene products that play important and conserved functions in the detection of aversive mechanical and thermal stimuli and the control of behavioural states. Key approaches will be to record directly from touch and pain-sensing neurons of nematodes by electrophysiology and/or optical imaging and determine how these molecules affect sensory transduction.

The ideal candidate will possess a background in neuroscience and specific skills in electrophysiological recording from nematode neurons. Candidates must have a PhD in a biological subject or due to complete doctoral studies within 6 months of applying (in a biological subject).

Successful applicants will be awarded a 3-year Career Development Fellowship/MRC Postdoctoral Training Scheme. The fellowship is a training and development position for a post-doctoral scientist who has recently completed their doctoral studies, or is moving into a new research discipline.

Working for the MRC provides a whole host of benefits including a final salary pension scheme, Benenden Healthcare membership and excellent holiday entitlement. You will also have access to employee shopping/travel discounts, on site sport and social facilities, as well as salary sacrifice cycle to work schemes and childcare vouchers.
