Postdocs in single cell computational genomics, epigenomics and transcriptomics

The European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing (ERIBA)
    University Medical Center Groningen

The European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing (ERIBA) is a newly established institute at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). The central theme at the ERIBA is the molecular mechanism of (cellular) ageing. We aim to identify physiological and molecular changes that can explain the loss of cells and functional decline of cells and tissues with age. For this, we make use of state of the art technology and a variety of model organisms. Furthermore, we heavily invest in Systems Biology to integrate our findings in the various mechanisms of ageing that have been proposed. The ERIBA is housed in a brand new building and part of the central UMCG campus in central Groningen, a small (200,000 inhabitants) but vibrant city (with over 25,000 students) in the north of the Netherlands.

    Job description
    Background:
Many important questions in biology require measurements of small cell numbers, or even single cells. This is the case, for example, in studies of early embryogenesis, in the analysis of rare cell types, or in the analysis of very heterogeneous samples such as malignant tumors. In the last few years new technologies have emerged that enable genome-wide measurements of both the genome, the epigenome and the transcriptome of small number of cells and even single cells. Single-cell sequencing allows studies of the DNA of an individual cell, while Strand-Seq permits the sequencing of the template strands from a single cell. At the epigenomic level, the measurement of genome-wide DNA methylation is possible for a single cell with single cell bisulfite sequencing (sc-BS-seq), while the measurement of the genome-wide localization of different histone modifications is now possible for a few hundred cells using chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by sequencing (ChIP-seq). Finally, single cell transcriptomics allows for the sequencing of the RNA of a single cell, and single cell sequencing and single cell bisulfite sequencing can be combined with single cell RNA sequencing in the same cell.
The two postdoc positions will be hosted at the Quantitative Epigenetics group, lead by Dr. Maria Colome-Tatche. Dr. Colome-Tatche has a double appointment between the ERIBA and the Institute of Computational Biology at the Helmholz Zentrum München (Germany). The postdoc applicants will integrate the research team of Dr. Colome-Tatche at ERIBA and will contribute to the building of a collaboration between ERIBA and the Helmholtz Zentrum München.
During the postdoc project you will work in the development of algorithms and pipelines for the analysis of single cell genomic data (SNP calling, copy number variation calling), single cell Strand-seq data (sister chromatid exchange calling, correlation with single cell gene expression), single cell and low input epigenomic data (sc-BS-seq, low input ChIP-seq) and bulk sequencing data (whole genome sequencing, whole genome BS-seq, ChIP-seq). You will also contribute to the analysis of data generated by several experimental collaborators both at ERIBA and at the University Medical Centre Groningen, as well as internationally.

    What do we ask
The Postdoc applications should have the following requirements:
    - Highly motivated with a proven track record of previous research in bioinformatics and epigenetics.
    - A PhD degree in Bioinformatics or related field.
    - Experience with next generation sequencing data and with epigenetic data.
    - Demonstrated ability to function in a team.

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. You may be required to build up sufficient protection against Hepatitis B before you can be appointed. Vaccination is provided by the UMCG if necessary.

    What do we offer
Maximum salary amount € 4.152,- gross per month (scale 10) depending on your qualifications and experience, based on a full-time position.
In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, an 8.3% end-of-year bonus and a development budget. The terms of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centers (CAO-UMC).
Duration of the contract: One year with possibility for extension.
