Postdoctoral Research Assistant

A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences (SBCS) at Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL) with Dr Maxie Roessler, working in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy on the enzyme complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain.

As a member of the prestigious Russell Group, QMUL is one of UK’s leading research-focused higher education institutions, where multidisciplinary research is carried out at the highest level. The EPR facility at the SBCS is exceptionally well-equipped and includes a state-of-the-art closed-cycle cryostat enabling measurements down to 1.6 K.

This appointment forms part of a project funded by the EPSRC in collaboration with Dr. Judy Hirst (Medical Research Council, Cambridge) and Prof. Simon de Vries (Technical University Delft, Netherlands), where EPR spectroscopy and biochemical methods are combined to investigate the mechanism of mitochondrial complex I, the first and least understood enzyme in the respiratory chain. The project will also involve freeze-quench experiments in the de Vries laboratory. For some background information see P Natl Acad Sci USA 2010, 107, 1930 and Annu Rev Biochem 2013, 82, 551.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent in chemistry, biochemistry or other relevant discipline and have an established track record of success in high-quality original research. Applicants should have a solid grounding in EPR spectroscopy and/or have worked on membrane proteins. For candidates without a background in EPR spectroscopy a keen interest to learn the technique will be expected and a background in the physical basis of NMR spectroscopy would be desirable. During the project the PDRA will have the opportunity to develop his/her supervision, writing, communication and organisational skills. Duties may also include assisting in the training and supervision of PhD and final year project students.

The position is full time and available for one year, with possibility of extension for one additional year. The starting salary will be in the range of £31,735 - £33,476 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Salary will be according to qualifications, skills and experience. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
