Postdoctoral Training Fellow - Extracellular Matrix Proteomics

The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease. Today, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.

Under the leadership of our Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman FMedSci, the ICR is ranked as the UK’s leading academic research centre. Together with our partner The Royal Marsden, we are rated in the top four cancer centres globally.

The ICR is committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.

A position for a Postdoctoral Training Fellow is available in 2015 in the Protein Networks Laboratory (led by Dr. Paul Huang) in The Institute of Cancer Research based in Chelsea. This project is funded by Breast Cancer Campaign and will be to study the extracellular matrix alterations associated with breast cancer progression using mass spectrometry-based proteomics. This is an ideal opportunity for a committed and enthusiastic scientist to apply proteomic strategies to characterise the cancer matrisome in in vivo murine models and patient tissue. The successful candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a mass spectrometry suite that is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and facilities. This work will be performed in close collaboration with colleagues in the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre (Dr. Rachael Natrajan and Dr. Beatrice Howard) and candidates are expected to excel in a team-based science environment.

Applicants will hold a PhD in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Cancer Biology, or a similar discipline. Applicants must have good laboratory and analytical skills with experience in working in a collaborative environment. Hands-on experience in mass spectrometry-based proteomics is essential. We are particularly interested in candidates with practical experience in applying quantitative proteomic workflows in tissue and tumour samples (both label and label-free) as this would be advantageous. Prior working knowledge with Triple-TOF and Triple-Quad mass spectrometers and associated liquid chromatography and bioinformatics pipelines would also be an advantage as well as experience in breast cancer research and matrix biology.

Candidates should be capable of working independently, be ambitious and driven to achieve goals and are expected to have at least one first author peer reviewed publication.

The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract of 36 months with a starting salary in the range of £28,966 p.a. to £33,110 p.a. inclusive based on previous postdoctoral experience. The full salary scale for the post is in the range of £28,966 p.a. to £41,400 p.a. inclusive.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr. Paul Huang ([email protected]). Please do not send your application to Dr Paul Huang, formal applications must be submitted online.

To apply please submit your CV and covering letter (addressing with specific examples where you meet the person specification and incl. the names and addresses of two referees) online at http://www.icr.ac.uk/jobsearch. Job Ref. No. 1460957.
