We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to analyse and model the survival of butterflies and other insects that are declining in response to climate change. You will develop fundamental scientific understanding of the dynamics of species’ geographic distributions, identify their capacity to survive anthropogenic climate change within population refugia, and help develop effective conservation strategies.

You will have strong computational and programming skills, preferably with experience of simulation modelling and using ecological and climatological data bases. You will co-ordinate your research with other researchers, who will be undertaking field surveys and developing microclimate data layers. You will disseminate the results through written scientific papers and oral presentations, and also disseminate their implications for policy and conservation. You will already have or will be awarded a relevant PhD with six months of starting in the post.

You will join an exciting NERC funded project, based in the research group of Professors Chris Thomas, Jane Hill, and Calvin Dytham in the Department of Biology at York. The project will involve collaboration with the research groups of Professor Brian Huntley at Durham University, Dr Aldina Franco at the University of East Anglia, Dr Tom Oliver at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, and Richard Fox and colleagues at the NGO Butterfly Conservation.
